Cracked Tooth? Here’s What to Do Before It Gets Worse

Close-up of chipped front tooth, dentist in Indian River

Tooth pain can stop you in your tracks, especially when it’s caused by a crack you didn’t see coming. Whether from biting down on something hard or an old filling giving out, a cracked tooth requires prompt attention. Promptly seeing a dentist in Indian River can save your tooth and prevent future complications.

Recognizing the Signs Early

Cracks aren’t always visible, but your body sends clues. Watch for:

  • Sharp pain when biting or chewing
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold
  • Discomfort that comes and goes
  • Swelling near the affected tooth

Even if the pain fades, don’t ignore it. Cracks allow bacteria to enter and cause infection or decay beneath the surface.

What to Do Right Away

If you suspect a cracked tooth:

  • Rinse your mouth with warm water
  • Avoid chewing on that side
  • Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling
  • Take over-the-counter pain relief if needed
  • Schedule an emergency visit immediately

Cracks don’t heal on their own, and waiting too long may lead to root canal treatment or even tooth extraction.
