Do Teeth Move as You Age?

man brushing teeth as advised by his Ft Pierce Dentist

As we age, our bodies go through many changes, and our teeth are no exception. You might wonder if your teeth will shift over time, and your Ft. Pierce dentist will tell you that they can. Understanding why this happens can help you maintain a healthy, aligned smile.

Why Do Teeth Move Over Time?

Teeth can shift for several reasons as you age. One common cause is the natural wear and tear on your teeth and gums. As the tissues supporting your teeth weaken, teeth may gradually move out of their original positions. Additionally, changes in bone density and jaw shape can contribute to this movement, leading to misalignment or crowding.

Another factor is the natural loss of enamel, which can alter the bite and cause teeth to shift slightly. Even if you’ve had orthodontic treatment in the past, it’s possible for teeth to move again, especially if retainers are not worn as recommended.

How to Prevent Teeth from Moving

While some shifting is natural, there are steps you can take to minimize it. Wearing a retainer as prescribed by your dentist, practicing good oral hygiene, and addressing any bite issues early can all help keep your teeth in place. Regular dental check-ups are also crucial for monitoring any changes and addressing them promptly.
