Effective Distraction Techniques for Dental Anxiety

Nervous patient at Dentist in Indian River

Some people don’t look forward to their next dental appointment because they feel lightheaded at the mere thought of sitting in the dentist’s chair. The fear of the dentist in Indian River is real and it affects 36% of the American population. If you struggle with dental anxiety, be glad to know that you can manage your apprehension by using certain distraction techniques.

What Are the Most Effective Distraction Techniques for Dental Anxiety?

Listen To Music

It’s best to wear noise-canceling headphones while you’re getting some dental work done. Zoning out from the treatment is easier if you’re listening to your favorite playlist rather than the sounds from the drill. Besides effectively distracting you, music can also help regulate your breathing, slow down your heart rate, lower your blood pressure, and decrease your body’s stress hormones.

Before your appointment, you may want to experiment with different types of music to find the right one for you. Since most patients agree that classical music can quickly calm them down while they’re receiving treatment, try to pick some pieces that you like and add them to your playlist.

Relax with Audiobooks

Listening to audiobooks is one of the most effective ways to bring down your stress levels almost instantly. You can easily ignore everything that’s going on around you as you lose yourself in the narrator’s soothing and calming voice. While the dentist gets to work, you simply close your eyes, tune in to the story, and hang on to every word you hear.

Prior to your appointment, be sure to have your audiobooks downloaded on your smart device. Also, you’ll want to begin listening to your audiobook before you step inside your dentist’s office. When you’re already invested in the narrative, you’re less likely to feel anxious even before your treatment starts.
