How to Maintain Fresh Breath While Wearing Dentures

man with Port St Lucie Dentures has bad breath

Option for dentures to replace your missing teeth can bring a lot of benefits, but one concern for many is keeping breath fresh. Bad breath can develop if food particles and bacteria aren’t properly cleaned, but with a few simple steps, you can enjoy fresh breath all day long while wearing your Port St. Lucie dentures.

Tips to Maintain a Fresh Breath While Wearing Dentures

1. Clean Your Dentures Regularly

To prevent bad breath, it’s crucial to keep your dentures clean. Brush them twice a day using a soft brush and a denture cleaner. Avoid using regular toothpaste, as it can damage your dentures. Soak them overnight in a cleaning solution to remove bacteria and food debris.

2. Rinse After Eating

After meals, rinse your mouth with water or a mouthwash to wash away any food particles. This simple step can help prevent bacteria buildup, which is a common cause of bad breath.

3. Maintain Good Oral Hygiene

Don’t forget your gums, tongue, and natural teeth (if you have partial dentures). Gently brush your gums and tongue to remove bacteria and keep your mouth fresh. If you wear partial dentures, clean your natural teeth well to prevent plaque buildup.

4. Stay Hydrated

Dry mouth can contribute to bad breath, so drink plenty of water throughout the day. This helps keep your mouth moist and supports the production of saliva, which helps wash away food particles and bacteria.

5. Visit Your Dentist Regularly

Routine dental check-ups are essential for denture wearers. Your dentist can ensure your dentures fit well and help with any issues that might be contributing to bad breath. Regular cleanings also prevent plaque buildup on your dentures.

6. Use a Denture-Specific Mouthwash

These mouthwashes not only freshen your breath but also help to reduce bacteria buildup on your dentures and inside your mouth. They’re often formulated to clean both dentures and your mouth without irritating your gums.
