Vero Beach Dental Implants | When to Load an Implant

For completely edentulous patients, Vero Beach dental implants are the best option there is especially if they’re worried about fake teeth slipping while eating and talking. Dental implants have become the gold standard for teeth replacement all over the world over the last few decades. Because of its durability and numerous benefits to patients in need of teeth replacement, the popularity of dental implants has rapidly increased. But what does it take for a successful dental implant placement? It requires a process called “osseointegration”.

Definition of Osseointegration

Osseointegration (to make whole) is the direct structural and functional connection between living bone and the surface of a load-bearing artificial implant. This process allows dental implants to become a permanent part of your jaw. The process of osseointegration typically lasts between three to six months.

Dental Implant Loading Principles

Implant loading can be challenging. If you have had several failed dental implants in recent months, it could be due to your health, the quality of the bone or the procedure itself could be the problem. For oral surgeons, observing the bone density when loading an implant is very important. If the bone is dense on placement, immediate loading can be applied in some cases. Here are several principles that can guide you in deciding to load or not to load an implant:

  • When the bone has moderate density and there is some resistance during placement, a healing abutment or the final abutment with a provisional restoration on it can be placed on the implant but, both should not contact opposing teeth when occluded.
  • Less occlusal force is placed on the implant if it is loaded immediately. It is also ideal for the healing abutment or to the final abutment to be slightly wider than the anticipated crown. This allows better access to the implant when a conventional or digital impression is made and more adequate soft tissue healing concerning the final restoration.
