What Are the Different Types of Tooth Stains?

Before and after seeing the best cosmetic dentist in Fort Pierce

3 Types of Tooth Stains

Extrinsic Tooth Stains

Stains that develop on the surface of your teeth are called extrinsic tooth stains. These stains occur as a result of consuming highly pigmented foods and drinks. Tomato-based sauces, soy sauce, berries, curry, beetroot, coffee, tea, red wine, and cola are the worst tooth stain offenders.

Moreover, regular tobacco use can also leave ugly extrinsic stains on your teeth. With regular brushing, flossing, dental cleaning, and professional teeth whitening treatments, you can quickly get rid of extrinsic dental discoloration.

Intrinsic Tooth Stains

Stains that occur below the surface of the teeth are known as intrinsic tooth stains. This type of staining develops when stain-causing particles penetrate the exterior part of the teeth and build up within the tooth enamel. In most cases, excessive fluoride use causes intrinsic stains.

Although these stains are more challenging to eliminate with just brushing and flossing, be glad to know that they respond well to professional teeth whitening treatments.

Age-Related Tooth Stains

Did you know that the dentin, or the core tissue of the teeth, is naturally yellow? As your age advances, your tooth enamel wears away and becomes thinner, revealing the yellow dentin within your teeth. These intrinsic causes of discoloration combined with the buildup of extrinsic teeth stains over the years can make your teeth appear yellow as you begin to get older.

Thankfully, professional teeth whitening can effectively remove built-up stains and brighten the enamel at any age of adulthood.
