What Happens During a Dental Cleaning Procedure?

When was the last time you visited the best dentist in Indian River? If you’re serious about keeping your teeth and gums healthy, you should schedule a dental checkup every six months so you can have your teeth professionally cleaned. If it’s your first time undergoing a dental cleaning, it pays to have a complete understanding of what you can expect during the procedure.

What You Can Expect During a Teeth Cleaning Procedure

Examination of Your Teeth and Gums

First, your dental care provider uses a small concave mirror to check for signs of various oral health issues, including the buildup of plaque, tartar, dark spots on your teeth, and gum inflammation. This allows them to identify the areas that need to focus on during the cleaning process.

Scaling

A manual scaler or an ultrasonic scaler will be used to get rid of plaque and tartar that may have accumulated on the surface of your teeth, in between your teeth, and near your gum line.

You’ll feel scraping on your teeth if your dental hygienist decides to manually remove the deposits with the use of a hooked tool called a scaler. However, if they choose to use an ultrasonic scaler, you’ll only feel a gentle vibration and water as large deposits are being removed.

Polishing

The next step is to polish your teeth and eliminate the stains. Your dental hygienist will use a handheld electric instrument with a rubber prophy cup attached to it and a gritty prophylaxis toothpaste. During the process, a slow grinding motion will be felt on your teeth.

Flossing

After polishing your teeth, your dental hygienist eliminates any remaining plaque and paste by flossing your teeth.

Fluoride Treatment

In some cases, you may receive a fluoride treatment during the dental cleaning process, which can come in multiple forms, such as a rinse or gel.
