What Types of Stains Can Teeth Whitening Fix?

Types of Stains that Professional Teeth Whitening Fixes

The whitening agent used in professional teeth whitening treatments works to dissolve colored molecules that stain or discolor your teeth. Let’s take a closer look at the types of stains that this treatment removes.

Age-Related Stains

When your tooth enamel gets thinner as you age, the yellowish dentin layer underneath it shows through, making your teeth appear to be yellow. Age stains are classified as intrinsic stains because they occur below the surface of your teeth. Thankfully, professional teeth whitening agents can improve these stains as they penetrate the enamel to be absorbed by your tooth’s dentin layer.

Food and Beverage Stains

Colored molecules called chromogens that are present in highly pigmented foods and beverages are notorious for staining teeth. While wine or tomato sauce produces a slightly reddish tint, coffee and tea may leave yellow to light brown stains. Professional teeth whitening can leave your teeth looking whiter by breaking down the colored bonds.

Medication Stains

Certain medications that include antipsychotics, high blood pressure medication, antihistamines, and antibiotics such as doxycycline and tetracycline can cause tooth discoloration. Professional teeth whitening can help fix this cosmetic problem.

Tobacco Stains

Cigarettes contain tar and nicotine that stain the enamel. While nicotine leaves a yellowish tin on the surfaces of your teeth, tar causes dark stains to cling onto your enamel. Your dentist can help you get rid of these extrinsic or superficial stains during your teeth whitening procedure.
