Why Does Your Tooth Hurt After a Filling?

man with dental pain needs to see a St Lucie County Dentist

It’s frustrating to deal with tooth pain after visiting your St. Lucie County dentist for a filling—it feels like the problem should be solved, not lingering! The truth is, some discomfort after a filling is completely normal as your tooth adjusts. Whether it’s sensitivity, a slight misalignment, or irritation from the procedure, understanding the reasons behind the pain and how to manage it can help you feel more at ease.

Common Reasons for Post-Filling Pain

  • Tooth Sensitivity: After a filling, your tooth may become sensitive to hot, cold, or sweet foods and drinks. This sensitivity usually fades as your tooth heals, which can take a few days to a couple of weeks.
  • Bite Misalignment: If the filling is slightly too high or uneven, it can cause discomfort when biting or chewing. Adjustments by your dentist can resolve this issue quickly.
  • Nerve Irritation: When a cavity is deep and close to the nerve, the filling process may irritate the tooth’s nerve. This can lead to temporary pain that typically subsides with time.

How to Manage the Pain

Luckily, most post-filling pain is temporary. Here are some ways to manage discomfort at home:

  • Avoid hard or sticky foods and chew on the opposite side of your mouth for a few days.
  • Rinse with warm saltwater to soothe the affected area.
  • Use toothpaste for sensitive teeth to minimize irritation.
  • Take over-the-counter pain relief as needed, but consult your dentist if the pain continues.

If the discomfort persists beyond a week or becomes more severe, it’s time to schedule a follow-up appointment. Your dentist can identify and resolve any lingering issues.
