Common Causes of Persistent Tooth Pain

Cavities and Decay

Tooth decay is one of the most frequent reasons for ongoing discomfort. When bacteria break through your enamel, they expose sensitive layers of your tooth, leading to pain that only gets worse without treatment.

Gum Infection or Abscess

An abscessed tooth can cause swelling, throbbing pain, and even fever. This happens when bacteria infect the root or surrounding gums, creating pressure and inflammation.

Damaged Fillings or Cracked Teeth

Even a small crack or loose filling can trigger nerve irritation. You might feel pain when biting or sensitivity to temperature changes.

Other Possible Triggers:

  • Teeth grinding at night (bruxism)
  • Sinus pressure or infections
  • Worn enamel from acidic foods or brushing too hard
  • Impacted wisdom teeth
