Can You Get Dental Implants If You Have Bone Loss?

Port St. Lucie dental implants candidate

Missing teeth can lead to bone loss over time, making some patients worry they’re no longer good candidates for implants. But the good news is, even if you have bone loss, you may still be able to get Port St. Lucie dental implants!

Let’s take a look at your options.

Why Does Bone Matter for Dental Implants?

Your jawbone plays a crucial role in supporting dental implants. Implants are anchored into the bone, just like natural tooth roots, so having enough bone density helps ensure long-term success. But if you’ve been missing teeth for a while, bone loss can occur, especially if you’ve been wearing traditional dentures.

What Are Your Options If You Have Bone Loss?

Even if your jawbone isn’t as strong as it once was, you still have options for Port St. Lucie dental implants:

1. Bone Grafting

If your jawbone isn’t thick enough, a bone graft can help rebuild it. This involves adding bone material (from your own body or a donor source) to strengthen the area.

Healing takes a few months, but after that, implants can be placed securely.

2. Zygomatic Implants

If bone loss is severe in the upper jaw, zygomatic implants may be an option. These longer implants anchor into the cheekbone instead of the jawbone, providing a stable foundation.

3. All-on-4® Dental Implants

This technique uses four strategically placed implants to support a full set of replacement teeth. The implants are placed at an angle to maximize contact with existing bone, often eliminating the need for bone grafting.

4. Mini Dental Implants

Mini implants are smaller than traditional implants and require less bone to anchor them, making them a great alternative for some patients with mild to moderate bone loss.
