How to Know if Your Child Needs Emergency Dental Care

child Emergency Dentist Fort Pierce

Most parents teach their kids to keep sugary treats to a minimum and brush and floss regularly. Despite maintaining excellent oral hygiene, there may be times when your child will need to see an emergency dentist in Fort Pierce. Let’s take a closer look at the symptoms of a dental emergency.

What are the Symptoms of a Dental Emergency?

Chipped or Cracked Tooth

It’s not unusual for kids to end up chipping or cracking their teeth after suffering a fall. In some cases, a chipped or cracked tooth may not even cause them pain.

A clean chip that runs across the top corners of the affected tooth doesn’t require emergency dental care. However, a crack that runs vertically or diagonally across a tooth constitutes a dental emergency. If left untreated, the crack can deepen until it causes structural damage when it reaches the root of the tooth.

Severe Tooth Pain

You may allow your little one to take child-safe ibuprofen if they experience pain in their teeth or jaw. However, if the pain becomes severe, you’ll want to set up an emergency appointment with your dentist. Your child’s dentist may perform an emergency tooth extraction if the affected tooth isn’t permanent.

Knocked-Out Permanent Teeth

If your child’s permanent tooth gets knocked out, you’ll have to hold the tooth by its crown while you carefully avoid touching its root. Rinse it with water before you place it back in its socket. However, if this isn’t possible, place the tooth in a glass of milk and take your child to the dentist’s office right away.
