Tooth Pain and Emergency Care

A woman with a toothache needing an emergency dentist in Fort Pierce

Pain is your body’s desperate attempt at telling you that something’s wrong. If you’re dealing with a terrible toothache that lasts for more than a couple of days, you may have to see an emergency dentist in Fort Pierce.

When Do I Need to See an Emergency Dentist for My Tooth Pain?

Sharp Pain

Pain with increasing severity or sharp pain in a tooth is a telltale sign of a severe dental issue. In most cases, this type of tooth pain means that you have a cavity. Without proper dental care, bacteria that cling on the surfaces of your teeth produce acid that destroys the tooth enamel and causes holes in your tooth.

Sharp tooth pain is also a sign of an abscessed tooth. Without immediate treatment, the infection can spread to the jaw, head, and neck.

Swollen Glands

An infected tooth causes swelling around the jawline and neck. Suppose your abscessed tooth causes inflammation in the glands located in these areas. In that case, you need to seek medical attention right away.

Bleeding and Swollen Gums

Also called periodontitis, gum disease refers to a severe gum infection that causes considerable damage to the bone that supports the teeth. Without proper brushing, flossing, and regular visits to the dentist, this disease can quickly develop. A toothache coupled with bleeding and swelling gums qualifies a dental emergency because these are the classic signs of gum disease.

Loose Tooth

You shouldn’t ignore a tooth that wiggles around because this indicates deteriorating gum and bone tissue. You’re experiencing advanced stages of gum disease if your toothache makes you feel as though you have a loose tooth. An emergency dentist can treat the infection before it causes you to lose all of your teeth.
