Does Teeth Whitening Work If You Smoke?

smoker needs Teeth Whitening Fort Pierce

Teeth, despite their solid appearance, contain tiny channels called enamel rods. These rods allow substances like those found in coffee, wine, berries, and even nicotine to penetrate. As a result, smoking often leads to yellow discoloration on teeth, which can worsen into a brownish hue over time.

Despite regular brushing and flossing, these stubborn smoke stains persist. If you’re thinking about teeth whitening in Fort Pierce to tackle this issue, there are some crucial factors to bear in mind.

before and after Teeth Whitening Fort Pierce

First, Does Smoking Permanently Stain Teeth?

No, smoking stains on teeth are not permanent. While smoking can cause significant yellowing or browning of teeth over time, the good news is this discoloration can be reversed. However, it’s important to note that if left untreated, these stains may become more pronounced and persist even after quitting smoking.

How Effective Is Teeth Whitening for These Stains?

Teeth whitening is very effective for removing smoker stains. Keep in mind that professional teeth whitening is the most effective way to whiten teeth, especially for deep stains from smoking. Dentists use stronger bleaching agents and techniques that can achieve a much whiter smile in a shorter amount of time.

What If I Keep Smoking?

If you want to keep smoking, then teeth whitening will require more maintenance to keep your teeth white. Here’s why:

  • Smoker Stains Return: The tar and nicotine in cigarettes will stain your teeth again, potentially quickly depending on how much you smoke.
  • More Frequent Whitening: This means more frequent use of at-home whitening products or more dental visits for professional whitening.
  • Increased Cost: Over time, maintaining a white smile with regular whitening treatments can become more expensive than quitting smoking altogether.
