Fort Pierce Dentist | Preparing For Your Child’s First Dental Appointment

It is important to make your child’s first dental appointment a positive experience so they won’t develop any negative sentiments whenever you go to the dentist. Aside from a child-friendly Fort Pierce Dentist, you also play a vital role in the behavior of your child towards developing a habit of good oral hygiene and regular dental visits. To make sure that your child’s first dental appointment is a positive experience, here’s what you can do.

Avoid Negative Words

Introduce the concept of a dentist to your child in a positive manner. Kids are very visual and when you say words to them they picture it out immediately. Using words like painful, scary, needles and whatever description it is that they can associate with something negative, it will definitely affect your child’s sentiments toward visiting the dentist.

Share a Positive Experience You had with Your Dentist

Kids love hearing stories especially if it is a personal experience from a person they love. They’ll be looking forward to seeing the dentist after hearing a pleasant story from you! If you didn’t have one, then don’t let your child experience the same thing.

Don’t Promise a Reward

If you do, they might do it because they like to receive a reward and this defeats the purpose of trying to make dental visits a habit. Explain to them the benefits of going to the dentist instead!

Find a Child-Friendly Dentist

It is important that you find a dentist who is child-friendly. They can help ease out the whole process by answering your child’s questions using simple and non-threatening words.

Develop Good Oral Hygiene

You can start introducing the concept of oral health by establishing good oral hygiene in your household. With the knowledge they have, they can interact with the dentist confidently!
