How Soon Can You Get a Dental Implant After Tooth Extraction?

patient getting tooth extraction from Fort Pierce dentist

If you’ve just had a tooth pulled by your Fort Pierce dentist, you might be wondering – how soon can I get a dental implant? The answer depends on a few factors, but in many cases, you might not have to wait long!

Can You Get a Dental Implant Right After an Extraction?

In some cases, yes!

This is called immediate implant placement, and it’s an option if your jawbone is strong and healthy. Placing the implant right away can help speed up the process, prevent bone loss, and minimize the number of procedures you need.

However, not everyone is a candidate for same-day implants. If there’s an infection, gum disease, or significant bone loss, your Fort Pierce dentist may recommend waiting a bit before placing the implant.

What If You Need to Wait?

If immediate placement isn’t possible, there are two common timelines for getting an implant after extraction:

1. Early Implant Placement (4-8 Weeks After Extraction)

This gives your gums some time to heal while still preventing too much bone loss. It’s a good option if there is a mild infection or gum inflammation.

2. Delayed Implant Placement (3-6 Months After Extraction)

If there is an infection or bone loss, you may need time for proper healing. A bone graft may be required to strengthen the jawbone before placing the implant.

Why Not Just Wait Indefinitely?

The longer you go without replacing a missing tooth, the more bone loss occurs, making future implant placement more difficult. That’s why dentists typically recommend acting sooner rather than later to keep your jawbone strong and your smile intact.
