Extractions

Sometimes a tooth will need to be extracted to protect your oral health. It’s a very common procedure, however, we will always look at every other option available before doing so. If a tooth needs to be extracted, you should have it taken care of as soon as possible to prevent more unnecessary damage.

What is a Tooth Extraction?

A tooth extraction is simply the removal of a damaged or infected tooth. This prevents the tooth from causing more damage to your mouth. Our dentists are well-trained and will make sure that the procedure is as comfortable as possible.

We will discuss restoration options with you, so you won’t have to deal with an open gap in the absence of your tooth. At Smooth Sailing Dental, we offer implants for a single missing tooth or bridges if you have lost multiple teeth. We also offer removable dentures for situations when most or all of your teeth are missing or extracted.

Do I Need a Tooth Extraction?

An extraction will be necessary if your tooth is considered to be beyond saving, meaning it’s so damaged or decayed that there is no possible way to fix it. This can happen due to years of neglect or as a result of periodontal disease. Periodontal disease (or gum disease) happens when tartar and plaque are trapped below the surface of the gum, causing an infection.

Trauma is another common reason for tooth extractions. Sometimes the damage from an accident can be so severe that we’ll have no choice but to remove the tooth completely. Tooth extractions might also be needed if there is an impacted tooth that is not able to grow through the gum tissue due to crowding or a similar problem.

There are also other times when a took extraction might be needed for reasons completely out of your control, such as impacted wisdom teeth.

Benefits of a Tooth Extraction

  • Stops decay and infection
  • Improves oral health
  • Relieves pain and swelling
  • You can eat normally again
