Oral Hygiene Tips After Getting Dental Implants

using an oral irrigator to clean Dental Implants in Fort Pierce

Replacing your missing or severely damaged teeth with dental implants in Fort Pierce is one of the best decisions you can make for your oral health. However, your new implants require just as much care as your natural teeth. Brushing can be uncomfortable since you’ll experience gum swelling after your procedure.

However, neglecting post-surgical hygiene leads to infection. For this reason, you’ll have to keep the surrounding areas of the surgical site clean. The cleaner you can keep the surgical site and your mouth, the lower the risk of infection.

How to Clean Your Teeth After Getting Your Dental Implants

Use the Right Toothbrush

You should use the correct toothbrush to thoroughly clean the implant and the delicate areas around the surgical site.  Your dentist may recommend using a soft-bristled or powered toothbrush.

Brush Very Gently

Be sure to brush very gently and cover as much area as possible without significant discomfort. If your implant is exposed, you’ll want to keep its surface shiny to avoid the buildup of plaque around it. While you’re at it, brush the gums underneath and adjacent to your implant.

Use Plastic Irrigation Tools

Irrigation tools such as a water pick or an oral irrigator can gently flush out bacteria from the area just below the implant. Since damaged implant surfaces attract bacteria, it’s best to avoid using metal instruments that may scratch your implants. Plastic irrigation tools are a safer option for post-implant oral hygiene.

Rinse with Warm Saline Water

Add about half a teaspoon of salt into a cup of warm water and use it for rinsing. The saline water rinse helps minimize inflammation and discomfort after your surgery. Additionally, it enables you to get rid of debris and bacteria that may build up in your mouth.
