What Are Dental Crowns and Why Are They Used?

Dental crowns are custom-made caps that cover a damaged tooth to restore its strength, shape, and appearance. They are commonly recommended when a tooth is too weak for a filling or has been significantly compromised by decay or trauma.

Crowns help preserve natural teeth and prevent the need for extraction, making them an important part of restorative dentistry.

When Might You Need a Dental Crown?

A dentist may recommend a crown in several situations, including:

  • A cracked or fractured tooth
  • A tooth with a large filling
  • Severe tooth decay
  • Cosmetic improvement of misshapen teeth

How Crowns Improve Oral Health

Crowns not only restore appearance but also improve function. They help distribute bite pressure evenly and protect weakened teeth from further damage.

What to Expect During Treatment

Getting a crown usually involves:

  • Digital impressions or molds
  • Placement of a temporary crown
  • Final crown fitting and adjustment

The process is typically comfortable and completed over a few visits.
