Do Crowns Wear Down Over Time?

dentist working on Dental Crowns Fort Pierce

Dental crowns are built to restore and protect damaged teeth, offering durability and strength. However, like anything that gets daily use, they can wear down over time. While dental crowns in Fort Pierce are designed to withstand biting and chewing, certain factors can speed up their wear.

Why Do Crowns Wear Down?

Crowns, especially those made of porcelain or resin, face the same pressures as natural teeth. Some common reasons for wear include:

  • Daily Use: Years of chewing naturally take a toll on the crown’s surface.
  • Hard or Sticky Foods: Regularly biting into hard candies or chewing on ice can cause chips or cracks.

While metal or zirconia crowns are more resistant to wear, no material is completely immune to damage.

How Long Do Crowns Typically Last?

On average, crowns last 10–15 years, though some may last much longer with proper care. Their lifespan depends on the material, how well they’re maintained, and individual oral habits. Regular dental visits allow your dentist to monitor their condition and address any issues early.

Can You Extend the Life of Your Crown?

Absolutely. A few simple habits can make a big difference:

  • Avoid chewing on hard or sticky foods.
  • Maintain good oral hygiene to prevent decay near the crown.
