What Are Dental Implants and How Do They Work?

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots made of titanium that are surgically placed into the jawbone. Once healed, they support a crownbridge, or denture, providing a strong, stable replacement for missing teeth.

Unlike removable dentures, implants integrate with the bone, offering a secure and permanent solution that feels and functions like natural teeth.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants provide several advantages for patients seeking tooth replacement:

  • Long-lasting durability and strength
  • Natural look and feel
  • Improved chewing and speaking ability
  • Prevention of bone loss in the jaw
  • No need to alter surrounding teeth

These benefits make implants one of the most recommended options in modern restorative dentistry.

Are You a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?

Not everyone is immediately ready for implants, but many patients qualify after a dental evaluation. Ideal candidates typically:

  • Have one or more missing teeth
  • Maintain good oral hygiene
  • Have sufficient jawbone density
  • Are in overall good health

If bone loss has occurred, additional procedures such as bone grafting may be recommended before implant placement.

What Is the Recovery Process Like?

Healing after dental implant surgery takes time, as the implant must fuse with the jawbone in a process called osseointegration. Most patients experience mild discomfort for a few days, followed by gradual healing over several months.

Proper care during recovery is essential to ensure long-term success. This includes:

  • Avoiding hard or sticky foods initially
  • Attending follow-up appointments
  • Not smoking during healing
