Can Dental Bridges Prevent Teeth From Shifting?

Smiling at Best Dentist in Fort Pierce

Yes, dental bridges can help prevent neighboring teeth from shifting into the space left by a missing tooth. If you are considering tooth replacement, the Best Dentist in Fort Pierce can evaluate your smile and determine whether a dental bridge is appropriate for you.

How Missing Teeth Can Cause Shifting

When a tooth is lost, the surrounding teeth may gradually move toward the empty space. This shifting can affect your bite and make it more difficult to keep certain areas clean. Over time, changes in tooth positioning may also affect how your teeth come together when chewing.

Replacing the missing tooth can help maintain the existing arrangement of your teeth and restore a more balanced smile.

How Dental Bridges Help

A dental bridge fills the space created by one or more missing teeth. The replacement tooth, called a pontic, is supported by neighboring teeth or dental implants, depending on the type of bridge.

A bridge may help:

  • Fill the visible gap in your smile
  • Support a more stable bite
  • Reduce the tendency of nearby teeth to move into the empty space
  • Improve the appearance of your smile

Are Bridges Right for Everyone?

The best tooth replacement option depends on your oral health, the location of the missing tooth, and the condition of surrounding teeth. Your dentist can examine your mouth and discuss whether a bridge, implant, or another restoration may better suit your needs.
