How Does Fluoride Application Help Prevent Cavities?

Smiling at Dentist in Indian River

Fluoride treatments can strengthen tooth enamel and help protect against cavities. A Dentist in Indian River can determine whether professional fluoride application is appropriate based on your individual oral health needs.

Why Is Fluoride Important for Your Teeth?

Fluoride is a mineral that helps strengthen enamel and make teeth more resistant to acids that contribute to tooth decay. While fluoride toothpaste provides daily protection, professional fluoride application delivers additional protection directly to your teeth.

Who Can Benefit From Fluoride Treatment?

Fluoride treatments may benefit children and adults who have an increased risk of developing cavities. Your dentist can evaluate your oral health and recommend treatment when additional protection may be helpful.

Some patients who may benefit include those with:

  • Frequent cavities
  • Weakened enamel
  • Dry mouth
  • Difficulty maintaining good oral hygiene

How Does Fluoride Prevent Cavities?

Eating and drinking can expose teeth to acids that gradually weaken enamel. Fluoride supports remineralization and helps strengthen areas of enamel that have experienced early mineral loss.

Professional fluoride application does not replace brushing and flossing. Instead, it works alongside daily oral hygiene and regular dental visits to provide added protection against decay.

When Should You Get a Fluoride Treatment?

The recommended frequency of fluoride treatment depends on your age, oral health, and cavity risk. Your dentist can determine whether you need professional fluoride application during a routine dental examination.
