Can Teeth Whitening Damage Your Teeth?

Treasure Coast Dentist recommending patient to brush

Tooth or enamel damage is one of the most common concerns of people who are skeptical about teeth whitening procedures. While plenty of patients still trust the process, there are some growing concerns about this procedure. Although a Treasure Coast dentist will tell you that this dental process is safe and effective, it’s better to learn the facts yourself.

Here’s all the information you need to know about this cosmetic dental process to assist you in better understanding the consequences of teeth whitening.

Possible Teeth Whitening Damage

Damaged Dentin

The hydrogen peroxide in over-the-counter teeth whitening treatments can impact the hard tissues beneath your teeth’s enamel surface. While excessive use of whitening strips and gel might harm the dentin of your teeth, it usually takes far more abuse to damage the teeth permanently. This does not imply, however, that overusing these products will cause your teeth to deteriorate or soften immediately.

Causes Sensitive Teeth

You may have heard that tooth sensitivity might result from teeth whitening. Although this statement is somewhat true, it’s still a rare phenomenon that often affects persons who already have sensitive teeth. There are little to no dangers associated with most ADA-approved teeth-whitening solutions. Obtaining a professional whitening may reduce the odds of developing sensitive teeth as well.

Infected or Irritated Gums

When a patient uses these teeth-whitening treatments and has an allergy to one or more of the components, it can result in irritated gums. The gums and the entire mouth will be impacted when a patient has an allergic reaction. If you intend to use teeth whitening products to whiten your teeth, you must first determine whether you are allergic to any of the product’s ingredients.
