Myths About Teeth Whitening – Busted!

MYTH #1: “You can whiten fillings, veneers, and crowns.”

Since fillings, veneers, crowns, and other types of dental restorations are made of inorganic material, they won’t respond to whitening treatments the way your real teeth do. For this reason, dentists advise their patients to whiten their teeth before having any dental restoration work done. The shade of the restorations is then adjusted to the new color of the teeth.

MYTH #2: “Professional teeth whitening will make your teeth look unnatural.”

Contrary to what some people believe, dentists can control the results of a teeth whitening treatment to ensure a natural-looking white smile.

MYTH #3: “Children can receive teeth whitening treatment.”

Tooth discoloration is common in children for several reasons, including the use of certain medications and poor oral hygiene habits. However, dentists do not recommend whitening on a child’s developing teeth.

MYTH #4: “You can remove tooth stains by rubbing fruit on your teeth.”

According to dental health experts, rubbing lemons, strawberries, oranges, or even banana peels on your teeth won’t do anything to whiten them. Since these fruits contain acids that can wear away your enamel, they’ll actually cause your teeth to appear yellow or become discolored.

MYTH #5: “Rinsing with mouthwash can help whiten your teeth.”

Swishing mouthwash won’t make your teeth a few shades lighter. Although some of these products claim to have whitening ingredients, they won’t work unless the mouthwash stays in your mouth long enough to whiten your teeth.
