Tips for Getting Your Sugar Fix While Wearing Dentures

Are you craving chocolates or candies? The good news is, you won’t have to deny your sweet tooth from time to time if you’re wearing Vero Beach dentures! The key to getting your sugar fix is choosing the right kind of dessert that won’t cause damage to your artificial teeth or too much stress on your oral tissues.

How to Treat Yourself with Dentures

Eat Sweets with Your Meals

Be sure to enjoy your sweet treats with your meals. Since your mouth produces more saliva while you eat, breaking down and dissolving the sweets will be much easier for you.

Additionally, your saliva reduces the amount of leftover sugar that can potentially end up stuck to your dentures. Drinking a glass of water right after is another way to make sure that no food particles get left behind.

Steer Clear of Hard and Chewy Candies

Biting into hard candies can cause them to break into small and sharp pieces that get lodged between your gum and artificial teeth, causing pain and discomfort. Alternatively, sticky sweets tend to get stuck between your teeth and can potentially cause them to become loose.

Pick Soft Desserts

While you may have to avoid hard and sticky sweets, you still have plenty of great options to choose from. Eating ripe fruits is of the best ways to get a bit of a sugar rush. Since fruits soften as they become ripe, you won’t have a hard time eating them while you’re wearing your dentures.

Other options for after-meal desserts include cake, pudding, ice cream, frozen yogurt, and crepes.

Clean Your Dentures Right After You Eat

Did you know that leftover sugar that gets stuck in your dentures attract bacteria? Failing to clean your dentures can cause bacteria to form a sticky film on your dentures called plaque. If left untreated, plaque buildup will eventually lead to gum disease.

It’s best to brush and soak your dentures soon after you get your sugar fix. This will effectively minimize the accumulation of plaque on your artificial teeth and reduce your chances of developing oral health issues.
