When it comes to the fight against tooth decay, a mineral called fluoride has always been at the forefront. Besides strengthening the teeth through enamel remineralization, fluoride also stops the bacteria from clinging onto the tooth’s surface. Although your Fort Pierce Dentist can give you more information about fluoride, we’ve pulled together the systemic and topical applications of fluoride.
Studies have shown the effectiveness of the controlled addition of fluoride to drinking water. Despite opposition from skeptics, many health experts agree that it’s one of the greatest public health achievements in the 20th century.
The most conventional topical delivery method for fluoride is through the use of toothpaste. It contains fluoride levels of about 1,350 to 1,500 ppm. These levels are considered the most acceptable for people who are three years and older.
Mouth rinses are used to flush out food particles and bacteria left from brushing. Stronger mouth wash formulas are diluted with water. Since alcohol-containing mouthwashes can be harmful to kids when swallowed, parents should choose those that don’t have alcohol in them.
In most cases, this type of fluoride application is typically delivered by a dentist for patients with braces and those who have high caries risk. The foam or gel is applied with the use of a tray that’s placed in the mouth for a few minutes. Eating or smoking for half an hour following the application should be avoided to make sure that the mineral is absorbed by the teeth.
After the dentist uses a brush to apply fluoride varnishes on the surfaces of the teeth, normal oral hygiene practices should be avoided for a whole day. For effective use, varnishes should be reapplied every six months.
