Why Do I Need to Brush My Teeth for Two Minutes?

Couple brushing their teeth Treasure Coast Dentist

While people may brush their teeth morning and night, not all of them are doing it right. Those who fall short end up seeking treatment from a Treasure Coast dentist for dental health concerns. It’s important to note that unless you brush for at least two minutes, you won’t get rid of plaque and protect yourself from tooth decay and gum disease.

Top Reasons Why You Should Brush Your Teeth for Two Minutes

The Experts Recommend It

If you want to clean your teeth the right way, you shouldn’t rush. You need to take your time and get everywhere to remove the bacteria that invade every inch of your mouth, including your tongue, cheeks, and roof of your mouth. For this reason, dental experts across the globe recommend brushing for a minimum of two minutes.

The Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives runs the 2min2x campaign to help parents minimize their children’s risk of oral disease by making sure that they’re brushing for two minutes, twice a day. Furthermore, the Academy of General Dentistry advises dentists to encourage children to brush for about three to four minutes.

Science Backs This Up

The Journal of Dental Hygiene published a study that supports the recommendation to brush teeth for at least two minutes. According to this study, plaque removal increases with brushing time. Participants who brushed for two minutes eliminated 26% more plaque than those who brushed for only 45 seconds.

Moreover, the difference in plaque removal was even wider when comparing shorter and longer brushing times. Participants who brushed their teeth for three minutes removed 55% more plaque than those who brushed for only 30 seconds.
